Underemployed ‘caught in the same bind’

They aren’t unemployed, but they face problems nearly as serious.

The underemployed are those who work part time when they want to work full time.

A part-time job doesn’t prevent the financial problems that beset the jobless. The underemployed are more likely than the unemployed to say they are cutting back on how much money they spend each week, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds. Twenty-one percent have fallen behind in paying bills or even face bankruptcy, compared with 26% of the unemployed. (Among all Americans polled, 11% say they are in this position.)
