Washington, D.C., January 07, 2011 – Ur Union of Unemployed today welcomed news of reduced unemployment for the month of December but warned that without a strategy to create at least 450,000 jobs each month, the U.S. economy will continue to struggle and stutter.

“One hundred and three thousand Americans went back to work last month. We need to cheer that fact,” said Union of Unemployed Acting Executive Director Rick Sloan. “And yet that number is less than three-tenths of one percent of our real unemployment. We still need to add 450,000 new jobs each and every month for the next five years to return to full employment. Unfortunately there is no strategy to achieve that level of job creation.

“This is so infuriating. Starting the third year of a Democratic administration, America’s jobless are waiting for a strategy, a plan, a program, or even a demonstration project that provides jobs – directly and immediately to those most in need.

“How can policymakers in Washington sleep at night knowing that they have failed so dismally to create a strategy to put 30 million Americans back to work?” asked Sloan. “Today’s numbers could be worse, but they’re no cause for celebration or congratulations. Much more needs to be done.”
